As the truck pulled up by the river dozens of children ran out to greet us, waving and smiling and just thrilled to be amongst all the excitement. We boarded a river cruiser owned by a local family and spent the afternoon floating peacefully downstream watching all the passing-by villages and farms along the way.

At the campsite we set up our tents and then enjoyed a yummy local meal made by our hosting river-boat family: grilled lamb chops, a spinach-like greens and pap/shimmr, which is a maize meal that is cooked to a thick porridge and served as a staple in most households here. I really like local food, the way they season things is quite unlike anything I’ve ever tasted before, things seems to be fresh and spicy all at once, and it never seems to amaze me the creativity and resourcefulness they have with cooking from the same basic staples day in and day out. I’ve been trying to eat without knife or fork like they do locally – however I think I just end up making a big mess! But at least I’m having fun, and I swear food tastes better when you eat it with your hands. J

After dinner we were treated to a cultural performance from 4 of the boys : two of the older boys (probably 15 or 16) played on their goatskin drums, and then two of the younger boys (I think they were only 11) danced traditional dances for us in the glow of the fire – it was awesome!! They danced and sang for us through most of the night, and then got us to get up and dance with them. One of the drummers attempted to teach me how to play the drum to one of their dances, but I’m afraid that all my musical ability seemed to have left me at that stage, and as patient as he was in his instruction, I managed to convince him that he was the superior musician and it was better for all involved if he played and I listened!

As the light faded and the performance had finished, some of the younger boys wanted to show us acrobatics they’d been practising, so we sat and watched as they did handstands and wheelbarrows; wanting to join in the fun we got up and assisted their impromptu play, doing somersaults and making pyramids with the boys, and then toppling over onto the soft grass and laughing until our sides hurt. One of the things that I love most about the African people is their ability to take such innocent pleasure and joy out of any situation; it doesn’t matter how much or how little one has, everyone has these beautiful, beaming, bright smiles, and is happy – nearly everyone I’ve met has been happy! And it really does just cheer your heart to be surrounded by people who are happy just for the sake of being happy.

We tumbled and rolled and fell over a hundred times until we were out of breath, and then as the darkness fell across the sky and the sounds of night came alive, small flashes of light started illuminating the grass upon which we were lying. It was utterly brilliant! All around us, on the grass and bushes, small sparks of yellow-green light were. One of the local boys came over to us with a torch and showed us a tiny bug, only millimetres long, in the palm of his hand; the bug had a light on the tip of his tail which rhythmically flashed on and off, and the lad said they were called ‘lightning bugs.’ There was an old bottle lying around, and I had the idea we should try and collect as many of the lightning bugs as we could and put them in the bottle to have our own flashing bottle full of them – so we did! We all scampered around the campsite on hands and knees catching bugs for our lightning bottle, which became like our very own bottle of fairy lights – it was just magical! (I did try to capture the moment on video –it doesn’t come out very well, but you can see flashes of light which were the bugs.)

Now I know that on the scale of excitement, spending the evening at a campsite on the river doesn’t rate particularly high on my list of adventures thus far into my African journey, but I wanted to share my experience on this night with you, as although my description may not do it justice, spending the evening with the 4 local boys, dancing and drumming by the fire, somersaults and handstands on the grass, and then chasing lightning bugs into the night was really one of the most special moments of many wonderful things I’ve done thus far. And as simple as the pleasures were, I know I will always be able to reminisce back to that night and smile.

Blog written by: Jess Morrison

Leaving Livingstone and Victoria Falls behind, we adventured on into Zambia and stopped at the town of Kafue, on the Kafue River – the namesake of our truck!
