Explore the lesser trekked route to the roof of Africa...

At 5895m high, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africas highest peak, and also the highest free-standing mountain in the world that you can scale without technical expertise. As a high-altitude mountain close to the equator, there are few other treks in the world that offer rainforests with primates and game, alpine pastures, high moorlands of giant eerie plant life and snowfields at the summit. Once on Uhuru peak you are rewarded with unforgettable views from the Roof of Africa.

Day 1. Moshi

Today is an arrival day. We can arrive any time today and relax after our journey to Africa.

Moshi is a pleasant town to explore with colourful markets and great cafe's

Day 2. Moshi to Machame Camp

Leaving our hotel after breakfast and our pre trek briefing we head towards the park gate. Road conditions might mean that we have to walk the last leg up to the park gate on the southern edge of the park.

The route takes us through rainforest and it may be heavy underfoot and hard going.

Day 3. Machame to Shira Camp

After breakfast we leave the cover of the forest as the vegetation thins out and we emerge onto the moorland before crossing the rocky ridge of the shira plateau to our camp for the night.

Day 4. Shira to Barranco Camp

Heading up the rocky paths to the Lava Tower this morning we subsequently drop down to Barranco Camp. This all assists with our acclimatisation to the altitude

Day 5. Barranco to Barafu Camp

It's another steep start to the day up the ridge to the great Barranco Wall and on to the Helm Glacier. Then we descent the Karanga Valley before turning up again towards Barafu Camp and our preparation for the summit attempt tomorrow.

Day 6. Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak Highlights. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

We are up in the middle of the night to start the last slog up the steep scree slopes to the summit where we try and catch the sun rising over the continent.

Once reaching the summit we stay a short while before heading back down and onwards to Mweka Camp.

Day 7. Mweka Camp to Moshi

With only a few hours trek today its a more leisurely pace today down through the rainforests to the park gate from where we say farewell to our porters and transfer back to Moshi and a well deserved celebration.

Day 8. Moshi

After a good nights rest, arrangements end after breakfast.

Additional Info

The Machame Route
The Machame is beautiful trekking allowing you to experience the southwest and southern sides of the mountain, as the route ascends one way and descends another. The ascent is via the southwestern side of the mountain, past Shira’s peak. This is the oldest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanoes and its plateau is more eroded. As a result, Shira plateau supports rich vegetation and wildlife and is considered one of the more beautiful areas of the mountain with grassland, heath and moor and wildlife such as eland, buffalo and sometimes even leopard. Ascending into the high valleys nearer the cone, you may see giant lobelia and groundsel growing to over 10 metres in height. At higher altitudes, vegetation is restricted to mosses and lichens able to survive the extreme temperatures above the snowline, as unusual African sight. On descent the route takes a more direct southern route off the mountain.
On trek all equipment and supplies are carried by porters, and a cook prepares all meals. Unlike the Marangu route, where accommodation is in mountain huts, the Machame route is camping with tents pitched by the porters. Meals are taken in the dinner tent or out in the open. This makes Machame better suited to the more experienced trekker. Scenery on the Machame is generally superior to Marangu - from the later afternoon sunsets at Shira to the misty revelations at Kibo’s great Marangu wall, the Machame route offers hikers continuous scenic highlights. As the route is completed a 6 day route, (Marangu is 5 days), the extra day may assist acclimatization.
