Day 1. Johannesburg to Hazyview Highlights. Shangaan tribal dancing .

From Johannesburg - South Africa’s commercial capital - we travel via the panoramic region of Mpumalanga with its beautiful scenery and mountainous views to South Africa’s famed Kruger National Park and spend the night outside the reserve.

After settling in, we immerse ourselves in the local culture and enjoy Shangaan tribal dancing and singing around an open fire to learn more about their culture and ways of life.

Day 2. Hazyview to Kruger National Park

Rising early, we board our open 4x4 safari vehicles ready for our full day game drive. Kruger is home to the 'Big 5' - lion, rhino, leopard, elephant and buffalo as well as over 505 species of birds which we enthusiastically search for during the morning and afternoon.

We return to our campsite in the late afternoon and enjoy an evening around the open fire

Day 3. Hazyview to Xai Xai, Mozambique

Completing formalities at the border post we enter into Mozambique and make our way to Xai Xai, the capital of Gaza Province and situated on the banks of the Limpopo River.

Our accommodation is set on the beach front where we spend the night lulled by the sound of the ocean and enjoy the fresh breeze as we unwind from our day.

Day 4. Xai Xai to Tofo, Inhambane Highlights. Inhambane, Mozambique.

Following the dramatic coast, we arrive at our beach resort at Tofo, Inhambane where we will spend the next two nights.

Tofo is a quaint beach town with lovely open beaches stretching for miles. There are many activities on offer such as horse riding, snorkelling and scuba diving. Whale Sharks and Manta Rays inhabit the coastline all year round but are in larger numbers in the summer months (November to March).

Day 5. Tofo, Inhambane Highlights. Inhambane, Mozambique.

Today is a free day at leisure to enjoy the local tropical beaches and the many activities on offer. There are some exciting bars and restaurants in the area - sample the local cuisine and the local beer (called ‘2M’) or else simply relax alongside the water's edge with a good book.

Day 6. Tofo, Inhambane to Vilanculoa Highlights. Vilanculos, Mozambique.

Leaving Inhambane we take the scenic coastal route arriving at Vilankulo (or Vilanculos), some 500km south of Beira and the Gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago.

The town was named after a local tribal chief Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke and hosts numerous activities. The evening is at leisure to enjoy the town and nightlife.

Day 7. Vilanculos Highlights. Magaruque Island, Vilanculos, Mozambique.

Rising at sunrise, we board a dhow boat and sail to Magaruque Island, the third Island in the archipelago and the closest to Vilanculos. Here you can enjoy snorkelling in crystal turquoise waters or simply enjoy lazing on the powdery-white, long stretched beaches.

In the afternoon we return to the mainland and our campsite for our last night on the coast.

Day 8. Vilanculos to Bandula Area

Today we leave the coast and head inland to the Bandula area near the Chicamba Dam. Our campsite is located within a 550-hectare conservancy. Closeby there is a local environmental centre that aims to educate the local school children about the importance of conserving the local fauna and flora.

We set up camp close to the dam and enjoy our last night in Mozambique before we cross the border into neighbouring Zimbabwe.

Day 9. Bandula Area to Masvingo, Zimbabawe Highlights. Great Zimbabwe National Monument, Zimbabwe.

We depart early in the morning and cross the border into Zimbabwe to Masvingo where we set up camp.

Nearby is one of the most important archaeological sites in Southern Africa: the Great Zimbabwe National Monument. Dating back to 1200 AD this was once the home to an indigenous population of some 10,000 people. We explore the area by foot with a local guide.

Day 10. Masvingo to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

We continue our adventure through Zimbabwe travelling to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second largest city.

We stop to stock up on supplies and explore the markets before continuing to our camp a short distance out of town close to the Matobo Hills.

Day 11. Matobo National Park Highlights. Matobo National Park, Zimbabwe.

Transferring from our truck into smaller 4x4 game viewing vehicles we are accompanied by a professional guide into the nearby Matobo National Park. Here we explore the park and surrounding hills and we may be lucky enough to leave the vehicle and track some of the wild animals on foot.

There is the option to extend this to a full day which will include a historical tour.

Day 12. Bulawayo to Hwange National Park Highlights. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.

Continuing on through Zimbabwe our next port of call is the oldest park in Zimbabwe, Hwange.

Hwange is home to large populations of a variety of animals including all the 'Big 5'. It is also known for its success with the conservation of the Painted Dog, the African Wild Dog.

We enjoy a late afternoon game drive with a professional guide in open 4x4 game viewing vehicles.

Day 13. Hwange National Park to Victoria Falls Highlights. Victoria Falls National Park.

Leaving the park we embark on the final leg of the journey into the small town of Victoria Falls. First stop is visiting the falls themselves and we explore the paths along the edge of the gorge where the Zambezi plunges some 100 metres. Its truly an awe inspiring site.

The Victoria Falls area is an adventure lovers paradise with a wide variety of activities on offer. Our team here will be able to run through the options and make the necessary arrangements

Day 14. Victoria Falls Highlights. Victoria Falls National Park.

After breakfast this morning our journey comes to an end but we recommend spending some extra time in the area to enjoy some of what is on offer.

Additional Info

PRE TOUR ACCOMMODATION:
This tour starts on at 7:00am on day 1; we strongly recommend that you plan to arrive the day before departure to overcome any jet-lag and to acclimatise to Africa. We would be happy to book pre-tour accommodation for you – please call or email us (or speak to your agent) with your arrival details and accommodation requirements. However please book early to avoid disappointment and the risk of having to find more expensive (or less convenient) lodgings. If time allows, we also suggest planning a night or two extra (after your tour) to make the most of this part of Africa.

Accommodation is usually available locally on arrival but you can also pre book this with Acacia. There is a variety of activities and excursions in the Victoria Falls area you can arrange locally or with your Tour Leader.

ACTIVITIES & EXCURSIONS:
These are optional activities that are booked during your holiday and paid directly to the provider while on tour. These options offer a variety of experiences and allow you the freedom to decide what activities you would like to do.

ACCOMMODATION:
We use 2-person dome tents with fly sheets, sewn-in groundsheets, zip-up insect screens and foam mattresses. We mainly use campsites, which usually have reasonable wash and shower facilities, electricity points and sometimes even a small shop, bar or swimming pool. The facilities on this tour may be more rustic than other destinations.

TRANSPORT:
12-seater custom-built safari truck with trailer for luggage is used, 4x4 safari vehicles and dhow sailing boat.

GAME PARK VISITS:
In order to maximise the quality of game driving and to comply with local authority rulings, some of our National Park visits and game viewing is carried out using services provided by local African ground handlers. As well as enhancing our experience using local guides and smaller vehicles also allows us to contribute at a ‘grassroots’ level to local economies from which local people benefit.

TOUR STYLE:
This is a participation tour and your help will be needed in assisting with the various day to day duties, such as shopping, cooking and keeping the truck tidy (usually on a rota basis). But don’t worry it’s not all hard work and it’s a great way to meet the local people and get to know your fellow travellers. Your contribution benefits the success of the tour - most people find the greater their involvement, the greater their enjoyment of the whole trip.
