The best way to see Stone Town is on foot; exploring the vast cobble stone streets and checking out the bazaars, old palaces and mosques. There is also an optional spice tour in the near by plantations where you can wow your senses with new scents and tastes.

Day 2. Stone Town to Kendwa Beach, Zanizibar Highlights. Zanzibar, Northern Beaches, Tanzania.

This morning we transfer from Stone Town to the northern beaches. We stay on Kendwa beach for the next 3 nights where you have free time to relax or take part in one of the many optional activities that offer exploration, fun and an insight to the Spice Island.

Day 3 to 4. Kendwa Beach

Spend some time wandering the beautiful beaches meeting the locals as you pass, scuba dive the warm waters of the Indian Ocean in search of the colourful marine life or grab a snorkel and fins for a day out on the colourful reefs. Alternatively spend the days out on the beach with a good book and cocktail in hand with the ocean only a hop and a skip away. There are loads of different day trip options to look into while at Kendwa.

Day 5. Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam Highlights. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

We make our way back to Stone Town for some last minute shopping before hopping on the ferry to cross back to the mainland. Once on the mainland we are met by the driver and overland truck to be transported to our campsite on the coast for the evening.

Day 6. Dar es Salaam to Marangu Highlights. Marangu, Moshi Area, Tanzania.

We rise early to get ahead of the traffic out of Dar es Salaam and slowly make our way past the Usambara and Pare Mountains. If we are lucky we may get a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. Tonight we camp at the foot of this great monolith.

Day 7. Marangu to Arusha Highlights. Maasai Village Walk, Arusha, Tanzania. Meserani Snake Park, Tanzania.

Today we are heading through the bustling town of Moshi to Arusha, the Safari Capital of Tanzania, which is exactly mid way between Cape Town and Cairo. On arrival to camp we head out on a walk to one of the local Maasai Villages. This evening we will prepare for our three day safari excursion into the Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater.

Day 8. Arusha to Serengeti National Park Highlights. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.

This morning we meet our resident guides, board our smaller 4x4 open game vehicles and head west across the Great rift Valley to enter the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. We drive around the rim of the crater and head down into the Serengeti Plains. This is home to an incredible number of grazing animals, predators and birdlife - an unforgettable wildlife experience awaits you here. Tonight we camp out in an open wilderness camp in the heart of the Serengeti - complete with the night sounds of the African wilderness to keep us entertained.

Day 9. Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Highlights. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.

It's an early start this morning so we can begin our game drive and seek out the wildlife that has been out and about during the course of the night. After breakfast, we head back along the plains toward the great volcanic crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. After lunch we ascend to the outer wall of the Ngorongoro Crater and finally make our way to the crater rim where we camp for the night. Perched on the edge of the rim with sweeping views into the caldera below, we spend another night out with the resident wildlife roaming freely around the camp.

Day 10. Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

Today we descend the steep dirt road of the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning safari in one of the most stunning wildlife havens in Africa. All of the major mammals are here except for giraffes, as they cannot manage the steep slopes leading down to the crater floor. Look out for the herds of buffalo, cheetah, lion and abundant hyena that are home to this great wilderness wonderland. We game drive back to the rim of the crater for one last view before making our way outside of the conservation area and back to Arusha for the night.

Day 11. Arusha to Nairobi, Kenya

Today is a free day to explore Nairobi. There are loads of exciting optional activities that your leader can assist you in booking. Visit the famous David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, the informational Langatta Giraffe Centre, or check out the Karen Blixen Museum. It's also a good time to catch up on some emails and laundry while relaxing at the campsite.

Day 13. Nairobi to Lake Nakuru Highlights. Great Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru, Kenya.

Leaving Nairobi early, our overland journey descends into the Great Rift Valley en route to Lake Nakuru National Park. A small park compared to others in the region, but this shallow soda lake attracts a huge variety of bird life - especially flamingos, which gather in large numbers and form a pink 'fringe' around the lake-shore. We include an afternoon open vehicle game drive with a resident guide to seek out the rhino and even leopard this park is famous for, before relaxing at camp for the night.

Day 14. Lake Nakuru to Eldoret

We make our way to the Ugandan frontier this morning with our final destination to the town of Eldoret. We'll cross from the southern hemisphere to the northern today and over the equator to stop for pictures along the way.

Day 15. Eldoret to Kampala Highlights. Kampala, Uganda.

With our passports in hand, we depart Kenya and cross into Uganda, which is described by Winston Churchill as the Pearl of Africa. After border formalities we make our way to camp in the capital city, Kampala - a vibrant and bustling capital city set across 5 rolling hills. Marvel at the busy boda-boda taxis, the colourful local shops and the friendly Ugandan people.

Day 16. Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park Area Highlights. Equator.

Leaving Kampala behind, we make our way toward Queen Elizabeth National Park where we camp nearby and prepare for our chimp trekking the following day. Along the way we pass through the subsistence farming communites and small villages giving us an insight into everyday life in Uganda.

Day 17. Queen Elizabeth National Park Highlights. Chimpanzee Trek, Kyamburu Gorge, Uganda. Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda.

This morning we enter Queen Elizabeth National Park which has over 500 species of birds and 100 mammals making it one of the most bio diverse parks in the world. Today our focus is on trekking to see the chimpanzees in the Kyambura Gorge. Chimps live mostly in trees so the viewing will be from the ground peering up into the forest canopy.

Day 18. Queen Elizabeth NP to Lake Bunyonyi Highlights. Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda.

Heading further into Uganda we travel south to the high crater lake at Lake Bunyoni which is our base for the next three nights. Due to limited permit restrictions to visit the mountain gorillas, we split into groups over the following days so everyone has enough time to complete their trek. This lake is surrounded by undulating hills and the lake itself is 27km long, 7 km wide at an elevation of 1950m above sea level. This is an excellent place to unwind, relax or explore on the days that we are not trekking. There are many activities to do here including hiking, local village visits and canoeing on the lake. Your tour leader will assist you in making these arrangements.

Day 19. Lake Bunyonyi Highlights. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Mountain gorillas.

Today we trek to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla in its natural rainforest habitat. This region is home to the world's remaining 700 mountain gorillas, many of which are in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. We will start our day early to meet our local guide and tracker before we start walking into the thick rainforest. This trek can be demanding but well worth the privilege of spending time with a family of these gentle primates.

Day 20. Lake Bunyonyi

If you did not trek yesterday, today will be your day. Otherwise, your day is at leisure to enjoy the many optional activities near the incredible lake.

Day 21. Lake Bunyonyi to Kampala

Jinja is described as the adventure capitol of Uganda. If you didn't have enough excitement sitting with the mountain gorillas, now is your chance to explore Lake Victoria and the Nile river. Our camp is located on the banks of the river and is base for the optional white water rafting here. You could also opt to visit a local school project called 'Softpower' and help build and improve schools in the Jinja area for the afternoon.

Day 23 - 24. Jinja

Enjoy a free day in Jinja. Adrenaline lovers can enjoy bungee jumping, white water rafting, quad or mountain biking. Nile river cruises, kayaking, and canoeing are also exciting options, as well as simply relaxing at camp for the day.

Day 25. Jinja to Eldoret, Kenya

With our passports in hand, we cross back into Kenya today. Tonight is our last evening on tour together, which makes for the perfect moment to swap stories about all of the amazing wildlife encounters and overland adventures we've had on our journey so far.

Additional Info

PRE TOUR ACCOMMODATION:
This tour starts on day 1; we strongly recommend therefore that you plan to arrive a few days before this to enjoy all that the Dar es Salaam area has to offer and to overcome any jet-lag and to acclimatise to Africa. We would be happy to book pre-tour accommodation for you – please call or email us (or speak to your agent) with your arrival details and accommodation requirements. However please book early to avoid disappointment and the risk of having to find more expensive (or less convenient) lodgings.

If time allows, we also suggest planning a night or two extra (after your tour) to make the most of this part of Africa. Accommodation is usually available locally on arrival but you can also pre-book this with Acacia. There is a variety of activities and excursions in the Nairobi area you can arrange locally or with your Tour Leader.

ACTIVITIES & EXCURSIONS:
These are optional activities that are booked during your holiday and paid directly to the provider while on tour. These options offer a variety of experiences and allow you the freedom to decide what activities you would like to do.

GORILLA & CHIMPANZEE TREK:
Depending on the availability of the chimpanzee and gorilla permits the tour itinerary may vary in day to day running order which is based on the brochure itinerary. From time to time we may have to trek on different days. If at any chance our Gorilla trek should be in another neighbouring country, e.g. Rwanda (instead of Uganda) this may entail extra visa fees although we shall endeavour to advise you before departure of any significant changes to the tour itinerary. Please take the above itinerary as a guideline only. This applies to day 18 – 20 of this tour.

ACCOMMODATION:
We use 2-person dome tents with fly sheets, sewn-in groundsheets, zip-up insect screens and foam mattresses. We mainly use campsites, which usually have reasonable wash and shower facilities, electricity points and sometimes even a small shop, bar or swimming pool. In the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater there are basic facilities. On Zanzibar we use basic tourist class local hotels.

TRANSPORT:
24-seater, self-contained, custom-built safari truck with on-board tables, plug sockets, freezer, water tank, library, i-pod jack, safety features and 70-litre individual lockers, 4x4 safari vehicle and fast ferry.

GAME PARK VISITS:
In order to maximise the quality of game driving and to comply with local authority rulings, some of our National Park visits and game viewing is carried out using services provided by local African ground handlers. As well as enhancing our experience using local guides and smaller vehicles it also allows us to contribute at a ‘grassroots’ level to local economies from which local people benefit.
