Do Your Bit For Africa & Hop On Our Travelling Eco-Book Depository!
Voluntours, village visits and community tours are part and parcel of our portfolio, but now we’re offering you even more opportunity to change lives on the continent. Enter the Travelling Eco-Book Depository.
Everyone is familiar with the term “reduce, reuse, recycle,” and that’s the basis for our new initiative. The idea is simple, make a little extra room in your backpack for a book or two, and leave what are much needed resources behind you when you go.
Toni White, Editor of the Reclaiming My Future travel blog thought our new way of giving was a fantastic idea, as she was faced with the very same question before heading off on her 41-day Cape Town To Kenya overland expedition. Toni’s feedback, “Actively encouraging people to pack and drop books will be a great help as there’s always that never-ending question of what to bring?”
Books are a scarce resource in the many primary schools we visit and while our aim is to be culturally sensitive, those written in English are highly sought after. And, with over 600 guaranteed departures a year we’re sure the Travelling Eco-Book Depository will be a raging success when it comes to learning more.
Group visits with us are also interactive as the children are always keen to scour the globe with our travellers and learn about far-flung countries. Want to be more involved? There’s even the chance to conduct classes, depending on the school’s proximity to your camp.
If you’re heading overland you could well find yourself covering up to seven or eight countries, and with a maximum number of 24 people on any one expedition that’s a great deal of giving!
How To Give Back
- Give responsibly – hand any books to your tour leader so that they can distributed fairly to the children by a teacher or village elder.
- Pack light – we all know it’s never as easy as it looks! Our suggestion, pack and repack to make use of that extra space. Need some expert advice follow some of the helpful well-travelled bloggers out there, as we’ve no doubt they’ll be able to fine-tune your list.
- Give to give back – No siblings or children in tow? Take a trip to your local charity store and pick up a few children’s books before set off on your travels.
- Tweet Ethically – Tell other travellers about your experience and encourage others to get involved!
