Justin Remekani Phiri – Tour Leader
Where are you from? Zimbabwe

If you could choose a favorite activity and game park what would it be? Definitely all the activities in Livingstone – white water rafting, bungee jumping, flights and canoeing trips, just to name a few! Kruger National Park – You can’t beat seeing the ‘big 5’ animals and what better park to see this than Kruger!

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have? That things are not always readily available in Africa – WIFI is the biggest one! Even though it’s starting to be more and more available, it comes at a price and is certainly not up to speed as you would get at home. Secondly, to leave all expectations at home. The countries that we may travel are not as developed as what you are used to and most things are done on what we say as “Africa time”.

What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
To make sure that everyone has checked their visa requirements prior to travel. Secondly, to make sure that they have enough USD cash to exchange along the way as it can be proven difficult to access local money from ATM’s especially with a non-VISA card.

George Mutisi – Tour Leader
Where are you from? The beautiful Zimbabwe

What is your favorite country and your top highlight of this country?
I would definitely have to say Namibia. The wildlife around the waterholes at Etosha National Park is one of the best game viewing experiences in Southern and Eastern Africa. Namibia also offers one of the oldest deserts and the remarkable Spitzkoppe… truly a magical place! It’s here we sleep under the stars for the best gazing night.

If you could choose a favorite activity and game park what would it be?
Matopos, walking in the game Park and getting so close to the endangered rhino.
What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have?
Weather… it does get cold, hot and it rains. Checking annual weather reports and packing accordingly to the seasons in Africa.

What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
We always get comfortable in our surroundings when group travelling so my advice is to always be aware of your safety when travelling – streetwise and money conscious. Please get the appropriate vaccinations before travelling.

Susan Kabue aka Maja – Tour Leader
Where are you from? Kenya

What is your favorite country and your top highlight of this country? Kenya The wildebeest migration – millions of migrating gnus with zebras, Thomson’s gazelles in tow, flock the Mara river to cross either to the Serengeti or Masai Mara in search of pastures and breeding areas. Easily accessible through the Masai Mara game reserve.

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have? 1. That it is the cheapest continent. 2. That it is not safe to travel too. 3. That we have unknown diseases. 4. Africa is always hot, it gets very cold in Africa as well.

Where would you like to see Acacia travel to in the future and why?
Ethiopia. Visit the Danakil depression (boiling lava lake), other unique tourist attractions and the cultural diversity in the country.

Ali Mohammed Musa – Tour Leader/Driver
Where are you from? Kenya

What is your favorite Acacia tour, highlights and activities?
Nairobi to Cape Town is my favorite tour. The biggest highlight for me is by far the Serengeti, the beautiful Victoria Falls and the spectacular game viewing experiences in South Luangwa National Park.

If you could choose a favorite activity and game park what would it be?
The best activity to do on our African adventure tours is a visit to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and the Serengeti National Park. Both National parks offer such diversity of wildlife and spectacular game drives.

What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
Please always be careful of mosquitos and take care of your belongings in the big cities. Not everyone is honest.
Where would you like to see Acacia travel to in the future and why?
Acacia is the best company, but to be even better in what we do, I would love to see Acacia travel to Egypt and Ethiopia.

Eva Routil – Tour Leader
Where are you from? Munich, Germany

What is your favorite country and your top highlight of this country? I have to name 2 countries: 1. Namibia, with the highlights Spitzkoppe and Sossusvlei (these sunsets!), overall the landscapes and open spaces in this country 2. Malawi, the highlight is the people, such heartwarming people. I always enter and leave Malawi with a smile from the inside.

If you could choose a favorite activity and game park what would it be? The activity would be gorilla trekking in Uganda, this is special! My favorite game park is either South Luangwa or Serengeti. South Luangwa is so untouched and beautiful, I could drive through without seeing animals and still be happy about it. The Serengeti needs no words, lion king overload!

Where would you like to see Acacia travel to in the future and why?
I would love to go with Acacia to Ethiopia and Somalia. As I heard amazing landscapes, culture and not yet very touristy. Not many company’s I know go there, so let Acacia be the one!

Where would you like to see Acacia travel to in the future and why?
Definitely Mozambique! This country offers such beautiful beaches.

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have?
I have to giggle about this one as clients think we are very behind here with internet connections. We do have internet in most places, it may not be as reliable as a first world country.

If you could choose a favorite activity and game park what would it be?
Namibia offers such diverse landscapes, quaint towns (skydiving… a must try – top activity on my list) and one of the most famous National Parks ‘Etosha!’ Game viewing is outstanding here and the floodlit watering holes are a great way to view the animal behaviors.

Francis Mburu Kangethe – Driver

Davies Phiri – Tour Leader/Driver
Where are you from? Livingstone, Zambia

How long have you been working for Acacia? Eight Years

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have? Most clients that come to Africa have a misconception about Africa that it’s not peaceful yet it’s the opposite – very peaceful in fact.

What is your favorite Acacia tour, highlights and activities?
The best tour will have to be the Cape Town to Kenya as it highlights two of my favourite places: South Luangwa National Park in Zambia – amazing game viewing opportunities and Ghanzi in Botswana where we have the opportunity to meet the Bushman and embark on a culture experience.

If you could choose a favorite activity and game park what would it be?
South Luangwa National Park… it’s not congested and Game Drives in most cases are very good (awesome).

What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
I must say not to compare what they have in the Western culture to Africa. Things work very differently here.

Shingirayi Goto aka Shingi – Tour Leader/Driver
Where are you from? Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

What is your favorite Acacia tour, highlights and activities?
The 14-day Mozambique & Zimbabwe Explorer (Northbound or Southbound). The game viewing in Kruger is outstanding, the Rhino trekking in Matobo is amazing and the warm azure waters, white sandy beaches of Mozambique’s Magaruque Island is a sure winner!

What is your favorite country and your top highlight of this country?
My home, Zimbabwe! Matobo National Park offers a unique experience like no other and is loved by all that enters this park. Trek the rhino’s in their natural habitat, visit ancient rock paintings and learn about the history of the remarkable rock formations and inhabitants of the area. A very informative day tour!

What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
Travel with a respectable tour company, like us where you can feel at ease knowing you are in safe hands with local guides that have been in the industry for a long time.

Where would you like to see Acacia travel to in the future and why?
I would love Acacia to see more of Zimbabwe. I.e. Matusadona National Park and the wilderness of Kariba (including the houseboats).

Paul Karanja aka Masai – Driver
Where are you from? Proudly Kenyan!

What is your favorite Acacia tour, highlights and activities?
I love the UAAV39-Nairobi –Livingstone-you get to see gorilla’s, meet the local kids and visit their schools, see the handicrafts such as wood carving, jewelllery and paintings and plenty of great beaches along the way not to forget the wildlife!

What is your favorite country and your top highlight of this country?
East Africa-I am from there!! The game drives here are great for visitors as you see the animals so close to the vehicles and great experience. I also love Namibia for the floodlit watering hole at Etosha, everyone who goes there loves it.

If you could choose a favorite activity and game park what would it be?
The Maasai walk in the Maasai Mara (being part Maasai myself!) The passengers get a great insight to this famous culture of East Africa. The village walk in Malawi also is a great experience and a nice chance to interact with the locals. The Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater also are top of my list-the wildlife is second to none-mother nature permitting of course!

What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
Take it a day at a time as everyday is different and enjoyable (T.I.A.) Happy Days!

Where would you like to see Acacia travel to in the future and why?

Colin Walsh – Tour Leader
Where are you from? Barrydale, Western Cape, South Africa

What is your favorite Acacia tour, highlights and activities?
DTR19 – It’s an action-packed 19-day tour. Always on the go. Bouncing from amazing activity to another. The scenery is continually changing & breathtaking.

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have?
Africa is not as cheap as it used to be. Things are quite a bit cheaper than in the Western World countries but I do see things costing a bit more than what was expected by clients. Make the experience worthwhile and ensure you have saved a little extra for all those mind-blowing extra activities.

What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
Make sure your camping trip is as comfortable as possible. Your sleeping experience is truly important so make sure you have the necessary: • A warm sleeping bag – Africa can be COLD! • A pillow – Airplane pillows just don’t cut it. Buy a good pillow. • Head torch – a torch is necessary; a head torch makes life so much easier.

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have?
Africa is not all primitive and offers a variety of levels of comfort.

Travelling with a tour company is the best way to travel in Africa. It offers the best experiences, easy access to destinations and local knowledge of the areas visited.

What is your favorite country and your top highlight of this country?
Mozambique is certainly my favourite country to visit and my top highlight is the Dhow safari to Magaruque Island, the largest island off the Vilanculos coast. It’s here we get to enjoy the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, the lush reefs, white sandy beaches and a delicious seafood lunch.

What is your favorite Acacia tour, highlights and activities?
I would have to say the South African Magic (SAM14A) tour highlighting the Okavango Delta – the largest inland Delta in the world where you can sit back and enjoy a mokoro ride through the labyrinth of lagoons and nature walks in search for the numerous game animals and prolific bird species that congregate around the water’s edge.

Tanzania – there’s so much great wildlife here. It’s just amazing.

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have?
There’s a lot of strange information out there about illnesses like Malaria and what the zones are where one should seek protection. Also the visas from country to country – many nationalities get these at the borders en route but are told in their home country that they must get them in advance at a great expense. It’s frustrating for the travellers when they see they could have saved a lot of money this way.

Africa is a safe continent open to travel and the people are friendly.

I think there’s a misconception about how unsafe and dangerous Africa is. It really is not bad at all. One just needs to be a little careful with their belongings as you would do anywhere in the world.

Where would you like to see Acacia travel to in the future and why?
I would like Acacia to be the leading travel company in Africa engaging in community-based programmes to improve the livelihood of the indigenous people and to help improve education, health; to embark on conservation programs and create awareness and benefits of tourism. Rimson Phiri – Tour Leader
Where are you from? Zimbabwe

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have?
Being African myself, I always have a giggle that clients travelling think that all Africans can not swim and we all live in premature huts. Ok, in rural areas, yes, but in general we have normal homes and most have learnt to swim.

What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
Africa is very unique and different from Europe and the first world countries. Each county has a different road system and infrastructure can be poor in many areas. I would have to say, to be patient and to go with the flow.

Peter Wambua – Tour Leader
Where are you from? Kenya

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have?
Some think you can’t get nice things down here eg. I can’t eat meat in Africa, no proper butcheries, but we have nice Supermarkets en route that sell all the nice cheeses, fillet steaks etc. Questions like – “Do locals get malaria?” We get bitten by mosquitoes, and yes we can then also get malaria.

Gladman Moyo – Driver
Where are you from? Zimbabwe

West Africa – it is my dream to travel the west side of the continent. It is one of the most uncommon tour routes for most overland companies.

The Desert Tracker – DTR19 tour because of the landscape & culture. I find it more exciting, every day is different, a variety of countries all with its unique scenery.

Wessel Olivier aka Old Man Wessel – Driver
Where are you from? Melkbosstrand, Western Cape, SA

I am a big fan of the Ngorongoro Crater. Not only is this the world’s inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera, the game drives in here are amazing!

What is your favorite Acacia tour, highlights and activities?
I would have to say the Cape Desert Safari Tour – NCDS11 which highlights Namibia. Etosha National Park is one of the greatest parks in Southern Africa to visit as it hosts floodlit watering holes – great game viewing opportunities. The Namib Desert also holds a special place to me as well. It’s captivating and full of charm.

What are some of the common misconceptions about Africa that passengers have?
That Africa is a Country. It’s vast continent with so many different cultures and people.
What travel tip would you give to first time overlander’s?
Bring along the following: 1 – A headlamp / torch. You will need your hands to be open 2 – Warm clothing. It does get cold in Africa!

The Kruger to Cape Town tour because of the game drive in Kruger, the Village at Swazi, Sunset cruise in St Lucia and the Pony ride in Lesotho with the performing band.

I love adrenaline activities so it would have to be the world’s highest Bungee Jumping at the Bloukrans Bridge. Adding to this would be visiting the Big Giants (Elephants) at the Addo Elephant National Park.

What is your favorite country and your top highlight of this country?
Beautiful Zimbabwe as most of my friends and colleagues are from this amazing country. Not only that, the mighty Victoria Falls, one of the 7 wonders of the world is one of the most picturesque sites to see on an African adventure.
