As we are approaching our 4<sup>th<\/sup> week of overlanding, sitting on the back of the truck with average and not a great selection of reads left, we\u2019ve decided to take the time to help you prepare for your adventure of a life time. While some of these may seem a little bit excessive, trust us \u2013 there will be a time and place when you will thank us!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/?attachment_id=1031\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1031\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1031\" src=\"https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/imagesCA3QL1T1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Essentials:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>40-page first aid kit including a gastro kit, plus a utility belt to hold the emergency items in:<\/strong> Just come up with a credible excuse as to why you\u2019re so geared up to avoid questioning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Head torch, hand torch, lantern, and a lifetime supply of batteries: <\/strong>A head torch is probably more than enough. You can even wear it as a necklace and have the light strategically illuminating your cleavage\/pectorals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interesting books preferably in English: <\/strong>You\u2019ll go through at least 4. Bring 2 along to read and then donate it to the truck library for others to enjoy. <strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>iPod: <\/strong>Each truck is equipped with an mp3 dock for you to put yourself and your music out there and let everyone silently judge you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SLR camera, point and shoot camera and head camera: <\/strong>One of the first two \u2013 depending on what type of photos you\u2019re after \u2013 is sufficient. For those heavy into adventure sport, pack the third.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hat, 30+ sunscreen, chapstick and aloe vera cream: <\/strong>You <em>will<\/em> get sunburnt (malaria tablets make skin extra sensitive to light).<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Travel-size pillow and blanket<\/strong>: Theft of your airline\u2019s sleeping kit has proven ideal. Desperate times, call for desperate measures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sleeping bag fit for weather: <\/strong>Sleeping bags fit for sub-zero temperatures in spring or summer would displease even the Dalai Lama himself.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Yellow fever vaccination certificate and visas<\/strong>: Depends on where you\u2019re going this could be a MUST. Immigration borders are not \u201cmzunga\u201d (white person) friendly at the best of times.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clothes to cover shoulders and knees if you are female:<\/strong> Respecting religious custom in countries such as Tanzania with a high Muslim population.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mosquito spray, mosquito net, electronic repellant gadget and repellant wristband:<\/strong> Bring them ALL. Mosquitos are <em>not<\/em> your friends. As our driver Paul \u201cPaulina\u201d Snow would say, \u201cmalaria is veeery , veeery serious my friends\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Walking shoes: <\/strong>Unless you want hippo poo between your toes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Worn-in flip-flops: <\/strong>The worn-in part is very important. A few of us are sporting some much unwanted weeping foot sores.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bargain underwear:<\/strong> Any place you can buy 6 for a $1.50, do it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adaptor<\/strong>: The trucks take both South-African and English plugs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wipes:<\/strong> The toilets and showers have been very, very interesting. These prove very helpful for \u201cbush toilet\u201d stops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0Optionals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Friend of the same size and preferably gender: <\/strong>Twice the wardrobe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Body bag:<\/strong> Handy for when you need to write down the rules of \u2018King\u2019s Cup\u2019 drinking game of course.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bulk buy cheap pens to give to village kids: <\/strong>It\u2019s all they ask for!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Binoculars and swimming goggles: <\/strong>A little too enthusiastic but they have been mentioned here and there throughout the trip.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multi-vitamins: <\/strong>Boost that immune system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Swahili phrase book<\/strong>: T.I.A (This is Africa) man, T.I.A.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Things you can give away<\/strong>: Handy bargaining tools for sellers such as Mr Vegemite (especially at beautiful Kande Beach!).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Usb<\/strong>: If you want to take some funky African beats back home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Written by: Catherine Pham &#8211; Travelled on our <a title=\"East African Explorer (EAE29\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acacia-africa.com\/acacia_overland\/east_african_explorer_29_days_2012.php\" target=\"_blank\">East African\u00a0Explorer (EAE29<\/a>) tour that departed on the 30th August 2012<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations and good choice in choosing Acacia Africa!
