Living in protected portions of 3 countries Uganda, northwestern Rwanda and eastern DRC with a population of approx 720 in the world. They are the largest of the primates and are herbivores. Their DNA covers between 92-98% of a human. Therefore, we as humans are the closest relatives.

Trekking the Gorilla’s is certainly one of the true highlights in your life. I feel blessed to have been able to experience and guide others in their own experiences when they see and hear these amazing creatures. Yes… I am one of the lucky few that worked on the road for ‘Acacia Africa’ through Eastern and Southern Africa. The passion and love of the road can sweep you of your feet into new dimensions. One seeing the Mountain Gorilla’s!

On your Gorilla trek you will be lead by qualified trackers/guides through the thickets of Jungle and other plantations. You will be part of a small group of 8. This is the limit for each Gorilla group per day. Viewing duration is 1 hour with the Gorilla’s and your trackers will advise just before you view them to place your bags down and get your camera ready.

The mountain gorilla lives in groups of 2- 40 individuals (Mainly around 11 to a group) all led by a dominant male or head Silverback. The females only reproduce between 2-6 living young in their life span of their 40-50 years. This can threaten these creatures to extinction. Therefore, we as humans must abide by rules and regulations when viewing these remarkable creatures. Remember Gorilla’ are acceptable to human diseases. Unfortunately, if you are ill with even with a common cold you are unable to trek!

There are many things that I advise about trekking and things to bring:

Minimizing your luggage to a small amount. This includes sharing sun block, small first aid kit, Insect Repellent with your fellow travelers especially trekking with friends/ group.

Wearing neutral colors whilst on the trek, long sleeve shirt and trousers to protect you’re from the stinging nettles and having the appropriate weather gear (this is generally optional under weather conditions).

Making sure that you are wearing the appropriate shoes. A trek can last anywhere from half an hour up to 10 hours.

Bringing plenty of water. I advise at least 2-3 liters (note that it can get really hot and you get really thirsty up in the mountains).

Make sure that you have charged all batteries in your camera and having spares. You will be surprised on how many photos’ you will take.

Having a small pack of sweets, nuts and dry fruit for energy together with a packed lunch.

Depending on where you are trekking a transfer up to designated areas are needed. This transport can take anywhere between 2 and 6 hours on roads that meander around mountain sides. So be prepared for any transfers and accommodation in the mountains surrounding the area of the trekking point.

When viewing the Gorilla’s there are many rules to abide by:

No flash photography. Move slowly to take photo’s

A maximum number of 8 visitors may visit a gorilla family per day

Do not eat, drink or throw rubbish in the NP or whilst seeing the Gorilla’s

keep your voices low to a whisper

No coughing, sneezing or even having the sniffles are not aloud when seeing the Gorilla’s

Stay together and never give eye contact

staying at least 7 Meters from the Gorilla’s

Remember to have a least half of your time watching them and not behind the camera lens. Photos are important but your memory of them is too. Watching facial expressions, body movement and just being a part of them is really special. I will never forget my experiences sitting watching and just being part of the Mountain Gorilla’s.

The Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla Beringei Beringei) is the world’s endangered ape.
