From an offbeat menu at an informal diner called the Boiler Room \u2013 a refurbished factory building \u2013 I chose the Durban specialty, Bunnychow \u2013 a hollowed out loaf filled with lamb curry and chilli-hot sambai (sauce) \u2013 washed down with squeezed juice of fresh orange, carrot, pineapple, and ginger, soaked up with desert of lemon iced carrot cupcake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left\">Definitely worth a visit if you\u2019re an adventurous foodie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LTHJ6299.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"6586\" data-link=\"https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=6586\" class=\"wp-image-6586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LTHJ6299.jpg 640w, https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LTHJ6299-600x388.jpg 600w, https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LTHJ6299-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">Mandela Moment\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">The N3 highway climbs out of Durban away from the coast. It\u2019s one of South Africa\u2019s busiest routes and continues all the way to Johannesburg but our turn off was to visit the site where in August 1962, the 44 year old Nelson Mandela was arrested by the police as a suspect in the Rivonia Trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">There is a small museum there, the most interesting exhibit scratchy footage of Mandela\u2019s first BBC TV interview \u2013 it was only a short clip and the footage was old but he was impressive, even then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Nelson-Mandela-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"6587\" data-link=\"https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=6587\" class=\"wp-image-6587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Nelson-Mandela-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Nelson-Mandela-2-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/acacia-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Nelson-Mandela-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>Image by SA Tourism<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">Going Into Battle\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">We continued to Spion Kop, a lone hill standing 400m above the surrounding plains. The battle that took place here on 24 January 1900, between the British and the Boers was short and brutal. Within a few hours some 300 soldiers were dead and another 1600 were wounded or captured, mostly British.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">The 24 year-old Winston Churchill witnessed the battle but it was the outnumbered Boers who came out ahead on the day. The British trenches could only be dug a few feet deep because of the iron-hard ground and they provided little protection for soldiers who had slogged their way up the steep sided hilltop overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">The battle, an embarrassing loss for the world\u2019s greatest power became so well known in Britain that the word \u2018Kop\u2019 was adopted for steep sided terraces at numerous football grounds, most famously at Liverpool\u2019s Anfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped
