Day Day 1. Nairobi to Arusha Highlights. Meserani Snake Park, Tanzania.

We leave the busy city of Nairobi behind and head for the open road to the border of Tanzania. Once we've completed formalities, we head on to Arusha - the Safari Capital of Tanzania.

Meserani has an informative snake park and Maasai Cultural Museum on-site and we visit these in the afternoon after setting up camp.

Day Day 2. Arusha to Serengeti National Park Highlights. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.

This morning we meet our local guides and board our 4x4 safari vehicles for our 2 night and 3-day excursion.

Passing through the Mto Wa Mbo and up the Rift Valley escarpment, we enter the Ngorongoro Conservation area and make our way around the rim of this steep crater pausing for photo opportunities.

It's time to start our game drive to our camp deep into the Serengeti after descending the crater walls. Here we enjoy an evening under the African stars whilst listening to the wilderness unfold.

Day Day 3. Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater

Rising early we board our open 4x4 safari vehicle for a rewarding morning game drive in the Serengeti in search for the 'Big 5' - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

After lunch, we cross the flat treeless plains dotting with wildebeest and other hoofed animals to the steep incline of the Ngorongoro Crater. Our camp is right on the edge of the crater itself offering magical views.

Day Day 4. Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha Highlights. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.

Another early morning awaits as we descend the steep, winding road into the crater.

Look out for the herds of elephants, buffalo and other hoofed animals, hyena and predators that reside inside this intact caldera - the largest in the world!

We head back to our camp in time for lunch and then it's back to our Acacia vehicle at Arusha where we enjoy an evening at the camp.

Day Day 5. Arusha to Bagamoyo Highlights. Bagamoyo, Tanzania.

Today, we head south via Kilimanjaro - the world's highest freestanding mountain. With a bit of luck, you may get to see the peak from above the clouds.

We reach the azure waters of the Indian Ocean coastline of Bagamoyo and set up camp in this tropical haven and historical port town.

Day Day 6. Bagamoyo to Dar es Salaam Highlights. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Today we are off to Dar es Salaam - a large city with a thriving port which processes the bulk of Tanzania's imports and exports.

We arrive at our camp on the beaches south of the city and have an afternoon to enjoy the surroundings, take a stroll and enjoy this palm-fringed haven.

Day Day 7. Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Highlights. Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Ready and packed, we take the fast ferry across to Zanzibar's bustling port of Stone Town. After formalities, we settle into our accommodation and have the afternoon to explore this unique city with its maze-like alley streets, historical monuments and local eateries.

Day Day 8. Zanzibar Highlights. Zanzibar, Northern Beaches, Tanzania.

After breakfast, we transfer up the island and possibly stop off for a slave and spice tour along the way to learn about the varied history, local fruits of this exotic paradise.

We have two nights relaxing on the idyllic northern beaches with the opportunity to chill out or enjoy the many optional activities including scuba diving and dhow safaris.

Day Day 9. Zanzibar Highlights. Zanzibar, Northern Beaches, Tanzania.

Today is a day at your leisure to explore the northern beaches. Soak up the beauty of these beaches, sip a cocktail or sample the local cuisine of the many restaurants that dot the coastal edge.

Nearby is a village of Nungwi where they build the traditional dhow sailing boats. Meander through the lively markets and view the craftsman at work. This area is famous for it's a vibrant atmosphere, local bars and cove beaches.

Additional Info

This tour departs Nairobi early on day 1; we strongly recommend therefore that you plan to arrive the day before departure to overcome any jet-lag and to acclimatise to Africa. We would be happy to book pre-tour accommodation for you – please call or email us (or speak to your agent) with your arrival details and accommodation requirements. However please book early to avoid disappointment and the risk of having to find more expensive (or less convenient) lodgings.

If time allows, we also suggest planning a night or two extra (after your tour) to make the most of this part of Africa. Accommodation is usually available locally on arrival but you can pre-book this with Acacia or your agent. There is a variety of activities and excursions in the Dar es Salaam area that can be arranged locally.

These are optional activities that are booked during your holiday and paid directly to the provider while on tour. These options offer a variety of experiences and allow you the freedom to decide what activities you would like to do.

We use 2-person dome tents with fly sheets, sewn-in groundsheets, zip-up insect screens and foam mattresses. We mainly use campsites, which usually have reasonable wash and shower facilities, electricity points and sometimes even a small shop, bar or swimming pool. In the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater there are basic facilities. On Zanzibar we use basic tourist class local hotels.).

24-seater, self-contained, custom-built safari vehicle with on-board tables, plug sockets, freezer, water tank, library, i-pod jack, safety features and 70-litre individual lockers, 4x4 safari vehicle and fast ferry.

In order to maximise the quality of game driving and to comply with local authority rulings, some of our National Park visits and game viewing is carried out using services provided by local African ground handlers. As well as enhancing our experience using local guides and smaller vehicles it also allows us to contribute at a ‘grassroots’ level to local economies from which local people benefit.

This is a participation tour and your help will be needed in assisting with the various day to day duties, such as shopping, cooking and keeping the Acacia vehicle tidy (usually on a rota basis). But don’t worry it’s not all hard work and it’s a great way to meet the local people and get to know your fellow travellers. Your contribution benefits the success of the tour - most people find the greater their involvement, the greater their enjoyment of the whole trip.
