Day 1. Arusha Highlights. Maasai Culture Village Walk, Arusha, Tanzania. Accommodation. Meserani Snake Park.

The first day of our tour commences in the town of Arusha, where you will meet your driver and guide.

Alternatively you may request to start the tour in Nairobi, we can arrange an additional shuttle service to Arusha, to have you arriving in the late afternoon. Situated mid-way between Cape Town and Cairo, Arusha is Tanzania's safari capital - a bustling city with colourful markets, shops, vehicles and people, all nestling in the shadow of the brooding Mt Meru (4556m).

After exploring the curio markets, we head to our accommodation, situated just outside Arusha on the open plains to the west of the city. It is from here that we prepare for our two night/three day excursion to the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

This afternoon, if time allows, we enjoy a walk to one of the nearby Maasai villages, a local school and clinic, a small but highly interesting Maasai museum, and the snake enclosure at the Meserani Snake Park.

Day 2. Arusha to Serengeti National Park Highlights. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Accommodation. Serengeti Camp.

This morning we transfer to smaller game park friendly vehicles and drive west across the Great Rift Valley, passing through Mto Wa Mbo (mosquito creek) and enter the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area.

We pass into the park and drive around the Crater’s rim and down onto the Serengeti plains. Green after the rains, brown and burnt in the dry season, this is home to an enormous variety of grazing animals, predators, and birdlife. Flatter and larger than the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti is simply huge - indeed the name derives from the Maasai word Siringitu – the place where the land moves on forever.

We game drive to our designated (but unfenced) accommodation for the evening where lion and hyena roam nearby for an unforgettable experience.

Day 3. Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater Highlights. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Accommodation. Simba Camp, Ngorongoro Crater.

We drive out of the plains, game driving en route, and after lunch ascend the outer wall of the Ngorongoro Crater. We spend the night on the rim, where wildlife also roams free (you may need a jacket; it can be cold at night due to the high altitude here).

At 326 square kilometres in area the Ngorongoro is Africa’s largest intact caldera and a World Heritage Site. The view from the rim (2400 metres above sea level) is spectacular, and the site from the Crater floor (some 600 metres below) is equally enjoyable.

Day 4. Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha Highlights. Meserani Snake Park, Tanzania. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania. Accommodation. Meserani Snake Park.

Waking early, we descend the dirt road of the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive in this remarkable wildlife haven. All major mammals are present except giraffe (which cannot manage the steep slopes leading down onto the Crater floor).

After our game drive we ascend to our accommodation on the rim for a final view over the Ngorongoro Crater, have lunch before retracing our steps to Arusha and our accommodation at the Meserani Snake Park where we will stay overnight.

Day 5. Arusha to Bagamoyo Highlights. Bagamoyo, Tanzania. Accommodation. Firefly Camp.

This morning we make our way south via Moshi to Bagamoyo. If the weather is clear we will be afforded a view of the magnificent snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak (5895m).

The quaint town of Bagamoyo was founded at the end of the 18th century and was one of the most significant trading ports along the East African coast. Our accommodation for the evening is situated close by to the palm fringed beaches of the Indian Ocean.

Day 6. Bagamoyo to Dar es Salaam Highlights. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Accommodation. Kipepeo Beach Village, Dar es Salaam.

Leaving Bagamoyo we head south to Dar es Salaam. ‘Dar’ is Tanzania’s main port and is a hub of commerce and industry - a hot, humid and bustling seaport city of high rises, colourful markets and Arab influenced architecture on the coast, accessing one of the most important sea routes in the world.

To most travellers, this city is the port of entry to the more exotic island of Zanzibar and other archipelago islands. We set up on the beach just outside of the city, take in the balmy Indian Ocean sea breeze, and prepare for our trip to Zanzibar.

Day 7. Dar es Salaam to Stone Town, Zanzibar Highlights. Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania. Zanzibar, Tanzania. Accommodation. Safari Lodge, Zanzibar.

On this day we depart Dar es Salaam via the ferry crossing to the tropical and exotic, Zanzibar Island. Stonetown conjures up images of idyllic, sandy, palm fringe beaches; romantic winding cobbled alleys and lush tropical forests.

Once we've settled into our accommodation we have the rest of the day free to head out and explore!

Walk the winding alleyways and old cobbled streets in search of local market wares and souvenirs or find a local restaurant with a rooftop and view to admire while sipping a delicious fruit cocktail. Stone Town has a mix of the old Arabic and new modern influences making for an eclectic and vibrant experience.

Day 8. Zanzibar Highlights. Zanzibar, Northern Beaches, Tanzania. Accommodation. Sunset Bungalows Kendwa.

Today we shall transfer to the northern beaches from Stone Town. Relax on the sun kissed beaches of Kendwa, in the northwest part of the island, take an optional diving trip to the rich colourful reefs or grab a snorkel and goggles to explore from the warm oceans surface.

Day 9. Zanzibar Highlights. Zanzibar, Northern Beaches, Tanzania. Accommodation. Sunset Bungalows Kendwa.

Browse the markets or enjoy hanging in a hammock with a cocktail and a good book. The beach is a great place to catch up with the locals who will pass by selling their wares, offering henna tattoos and inexpensive massages. Round the day off with a sunset dhow cruise or take a stroll to a nearby beach bar.

Day 10. Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam Highlights. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Relaxed and revitalised, it’s time to leave the northern beaches and retrace our footsteps back to Stone Town. Here we have time to do some last-minute shopping at the markets before waving ‘goodbye’ to Zanzibar.

Back on the mainland, our tour will end on arrival at our beach accommodation, just outside the city centre in the mid-afternoon.

Additional Info

This tour departs Arusha early on day 1; we strongly recommend therefore that you plan to arrive at least the day before departure to overcome any jet-lag and to acclimatise to Africa. We would be happy to book pre-tour accommodation for you – please call or email us (or speak to your agent) with your arrival details and accommodation requirements. However please book early to avoid disappointment and the risk of having to find more expensive (or less convenient) lodgings.

These are optional activities that are booked during your holiday and paid directly to the provider while on tour. These options offer a variety of experiences and allow you the freedom to decide what activities you would like to do.

Twin / Double share accommodation with facilities (7 nights) twin share tents with sleeping bag, pillow and mattress (2 nights) some camps may have a bar or swimming pool.

In order to maximise the quality of game driving and to comply with local authority rulings, some of our National Park visits and game viewing is carried out using services provided by local African ground handlers. These local services are included in the Local Payment.

Your help with occasional day to day duties, such as helping with shopping, cooking, dishes and keeping the Acacia vehicle tidy is entirely on a voluntary basis. It’s a great way to meet the local people and get to know your fellow travellers.
