Starting in Durban, this small group camping adventure tour heads inland to explore the majestic Drakensberg Mountains before heading to the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Enjoy elephant encounters at Addo Elephant Park, explore Oudtshoorn, Hermanus and the natural wilderness of the Tsitsikamma National Park along South Africa's Garden Route. End the tour with a wine tasting at Cape wineries.
Day 1. Durban to Underberg Area
We start our adventure tour north of Durban where we board our Acacia vehicle and head inland via Pietermaritzburg to the southern Drakensberg. An immensely scenic area, the Drakensberg is South Africa's highest mountain range, and we spend the next days of our Africa adventure tour exploring the hills and valleys along a section of the 'berg'.Day 2. Today we leave our Acacia vehicle behind and join local guides in 4x4 vehicles for a guided tour of Lesotho. We drive via the famed Sani Pass into the Drakensberg Mountains where we catch a glimpse of the Basotho way of life. We head up the Black Mountain - the second highest road pass in Lesotho rising 3240m where we enjoy our lunch. On our way back to camp we'll stop off at the Highest Bar in Africa for a refreshing drink!Day 3. Underberg to Battlefields & Drakensberg Highlights. Battlefields, South Africa.
Today we spend the day visiting some historic sites of the KZN Battlefields before finishing up at the northern base of the Drakensberg Mountains where we will spend the night.Day 4. Drakensberg Highlights. Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa. Royal Natal National Park, South Africa.
Today we spend our time exploring the Royal Natal National Park. Renowned for it's beautiful scenery and mountainous trails, we will have the opportunity to explore this reserve in the heart of KwaZulu Natal, enjoying its scenic views and waterfalls. Look out for San Rock Art along the way, and the local wildlife and birdlife that can be seen in the valleys and hillsides.Day 5. Drakensberg to Malealea, Lesotho
We continue on our adventure tour, re-entering the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho and driving over the spectacular mountain ranges to our camp at Malealea, nestled between the scenic valleys and hills. Lesotho is a landlocked country high in the Maluti mountains (the other side of the Drakensberg) with a predominantly rural population that survives on subsistence farming.Day 6. Malealea Highlights. You have the day free today to explore this part of the beautiful country of Lesotho and enjoy some of the optional activities that are on offer. Head out and explore the winding tracks along the hills on a pony trek letting the sure-footed Lesotho ponies lead the way, or try some adrenaline action on a mountain bike tour. There are a number of hikes to nearby waterfalls and places of interest too.Day 7. Malealea to Mountain Zebra National Park, South Africa Highlights. Mountain Zebra NP.
Climbing back into our Acacia vehicle, we bid our farewell's to the mountain kingdom and head back to South Africa. Along the way, we take in picturesque scenery to the Mountain Zebra National Park. Home to over 700 animals including eland, cape buffalo, cheetah, lion, caracal, black rhino, bat eared fox and over 700 Cape mountain zebra after which the park is named. We game drive in our Acacia vehicle in search for these animals en-route to our camp for the evening located inside the National Park gates.Day 8. Mountain Zebra National Park to Addo to Willow's Resort, Port Elizabeth Highlights. Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa.
Today we enjoy a safari in South Africa's third largest National Park, and one of the few park's in the world boasting the Big Seven. The Addo Elephant National Park is home to an abundance of wildlife species, including over 600 elephants, lion, buffalo, rhino, hyena and leopard, as well as the great white shark and whales in the coastal waters that form part of the reserve. We spend most of the day exploring the reserve and the many wondrous sights.Day 9. Willow's Resort, Port Elizabeth to Plettenberg Bay Highlights. Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa.
Rising early we head back to the coast and the Tsitsikamma Forest nestled in the coastal belt between the Outeniqua Mountain range and the Indian Ocean. We spend the morning exploring the park either on walks across the suspension bridge, forest pathways and walkways or can head out for a short hike along the first part of the famed Otter Trail. There are many rock pools to explore to see the variety of marine species, as well as the forest and riverbank with a myriad of birdlife.Day 10. Plettenberg Bay to Oudtshoorn Highlights. Cango Caves, South Africa.
We spend the morning explore the town at leisure. In the early afternoon, we continue our adventure to the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn. This area is also home to the Cango Caves, Africa's largest show cave system, where we can explore the fascinating underground caverns and their quirky rock formations.Day 11. Oudtshoorn to Hermanus Area Highlights. Cape Agulhas Light House, South Africa. Hermanus, South Africa.
We cross back over the mountains and travel to Africa's southern-most tip at Cape Agulhus. This is also officially where the Indian and Atlantic Ocean's meet.Day 12. Hermanus to Cape Town Highlights. Cape Winelands, South Africa.
Our last morning on the road takes us via the Overberg and coastal winelands to Cape Town. We stop off along the way and enjoy a wine tasting to see what all the fuss is about. Our adventure ends on arrival in Cape Town in the late afternoon.City Lodge is 4 km from the beach, 18 km from King Shaka International Airport and is adjacent to the Gateway Theatre of Shopping's sprawling upscale mall, cinemas, mini-golf and waterpark.
