Day 1. Nairobi to Maasai Mara

We make our way west of Nairobi via the Great Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The Maasai Mara is Kenya's most prolific wildlife conservation area and is home to a magnificent collection of wildlife in a natural, wild and untouched state.

Lunch is taken en route after which we take an afternoon game drive to our lodge, spotting our first animals and birdlife along the way. We arrive in the late afternoon and enjoy a relaxing dinner before spending the first night under the enormous starry skies of the Mara.

Day 2. Maasai Mara Game Reserve Highlights. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

We spend a full day in the park and explore the Mara game drives both in the morning and again in the afternoon. The Mara is crossed every year from July to October by large herds of wildebeest and their zebra friends who journey from the adjoining Serengeti National Park on a continuous circular migration. Predators and scavengers follow in their wake, relying on the huge herds for food. However, the Mara is excellent for game viewing at any time of year and with luck, we hope to spot some, if not all, of the Big 5 - elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard, as well as the numerous other animals, bird and reptile species.

Day 3. Maasai Mara to Nairobi Highlights. Nairobi.

We leave after breakfast for our journey back across the Great Rift Valley back to Nairobi where we say goodbye to our Kenyan crew and spend the night in a centrally located hotel.

Day 4. Nairobi to Arusha

This morning we are picked up and join the shared shuttle bus transfer to Tanzania, crossing the Athi plains and traditional Masai land to the border of Tanzania. We spend the night in Arusha, a bustling and vibrant city, located almost mid-way between Cairo and Cape Town.

We stay overnight in our lodge in Arusha and meet our Tanzanian guide and crew with whom we’ll enjoy the next leg of our adventure.

Day 5. Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park Highlights. Lake Manyara National Park.

Leaving Arusha we head out across the Rift Valley stopping off in the village of Mto Wa Mbu (‘Mosquito Creek’), before arriving at Lake Manyara National Park. The park is a beautiful area of thick tropical jungle and wide grassy floodplain, dominated by a giant soda lake. It is a haven for wildlife and home to wallowing hippo and thousands of flamingos that congregate on the lake shore. Manyara's legendary tree-climbing lions can be spotted, as well as zebra, wildebeest and buffalo can also be seen grazing on its plains. This afternoon we game drive across the park, hoping to spot some of its residents before making our way to Karatu to overnight.

Day 6 - 7. Karatu to Serengeti National Park Highlights. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.

Today we drive to the slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and ascend the crater wall into the Serengeti National Park. On the way we stop at Olduvai Gorge for a look where some of the most significant remnants of early man have been found. Once in the Serengeti, its wide horizons and open plains provide some of Africa’s most evocative images and unrivalled game viewing.

The name ‘Serengeti’ derives from the Maasai ‘Siringitu’ – ‘the place where land moves on forever'.

Day 7 is spent on game drives exploring the vast plains, hills and riverbeds in search of the wild inhabitants. Depending on the time of year and recent sightings, our guide will decide the regions of the park we explore. In the afternoon we head back to the Ngorongoro Crater rim where we overnight.

Day 8. Ngorongoro Crater to Karatu Highlights. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.

Believed to date from about 2.5 million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater was once a huge active volcano. After its large major eruption, the lava subsided and its cone collapsed inwards leaving the caldera. From the Crater rim (at 2400m) we pause to enjoy the sweeping view of the crater floor some 600m before driving down the steep access road into the crater for our morning game drive. With luck will see lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, gazelle, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, and variety of birdlife attracted by Lake Magadi, its large soda lake.

After lunch we return to the crater’s rim make our way out of the Conservation Area, to return to the Lake Manyara Lodge for another opportunity to enjoy the views over the Rift Valley.

Day 9. Karatu to Tarangire National Park to Arusha Highlights. Tarangire National Park.

Rising early, we make our way to the Tarangire National Park. Although small by Tanzanian standards, Tarangire has an unrivalled landscape of open plains dotted with Baobab trees and is renowned for herds of elephant and buffalo, and its tree-climbing lions. This park is one of Africa’s little-known ‘gems’ and should be on the itinerary of all lovers of wilderness and solitude. Later in the afternoon we travel back to Arusha to overnight.

Day 10. Arusha to Nairobi

Our final day sees us catching the shared shuttle bus back to Nairobi, across the Masai steppes. We plan to arrive back in Nairobi between 18:30 and 19:30 when the tour ends.
