Day 1. Moshi Accommodation. Springlands Hotel, Moshi.

Today you are free to arrive in Moshi at any time. Check in at any time after 12 noon and relax for the remainder of the day.

There are markets to wander and a small array of cafes and restaurants you can browse or relax at.

Day 2. Moshi to Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

After breakfast and a pre-trek briefing from your guide, we drive from Moshi to Umbwe Village, situated at the Umbwe Gate. This is where we start our gently winding ascent just above the village - before reaching a signboard that announces the steeper Umbwe trail.

Day 3. Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

Today we have an early breakfast before climbing steeply through forest glades, surrounded by Giant Erica & Heather trees and the scarped ridge which may reward you with a cloudless view of Uhuru Peak looming overhead.

Barranco camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, creating otherworldly sunset views before dinner is served.

NOTE: If you are concerned about acclimatisation on the mountain, we recommend you take an extra day here. It is useful for resting or taking it easy and helps increase your chance of reaching the summit by allowing your body to adjust to atmospheric changes more gently. If you are interested in adding an acclimatisation day to your trek, please speak to Acacia or your agent, as this must be booked well in advance.

Day 4. Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

We rise early and continue up the steep ridge to the great Barranco Wall, where at the top we marvel at the beauty of Kilimanjaro. We then descend into the lush Karanga Valley, from where you may see the jagged peaks of Mawenzi if the sky is clear. This is a shorter day, however it is important for your acclimatisation before the next couple of days. The afternoon is at leisure or explore nearby before dinner.

Day 5. Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Rising early this morning, we hike east over the ridges and valleys to join the Mweka Route. At this point, all eyes are usually on the summit above. We arrive o Barafu Camp and set up. Over dinner, the guide will remind us to prepare our equipment and warm clothing for our summit climb.

Day 6. Barafu Camp to Uhuru peak to Mweka Camp Highlights. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

We depart at 11:30pm (Day 5) to push to the summit. We climb northwest and up through heavy scree and glaciers to Stella Point. From here we join the top part of the Marangu Route and continue to the summit.

Once we arrive at the summit you have time to enjoy the accomplishment - the roof of Africa! Enjoy the views of the surrounding plains as the new day begins before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp for our final night on this magnificent mountain.

Day 7. Mweka Camp to Moshi

After a hearty breakfast we pack and head to the Mweke Village for a celebratory lunch and to receive the Summit certificates. Climbers who reached Stella Point are issued green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates.

After saying goodbye to the team we drive back to Moshi and our hotel for the evening.

Additional Info

The Umbwe Route
This Umbwe is the most spectacular and direct way to reach Uhuru Peak. This route became famous when it was featured in the dramatic IMAX film Kilimanjaro - To the Roof of Africa. On the Umbwe, you pass through strange landscapes as you climb through five climate zones ranging from rainforest to the summit's glaciers. The route follows a forested ridge to the moorlands, then traverses below the southern icefields to reach the Machame Route, which you follow to the summit. This steep, tough, and in places slightly exposed trek is suitable for a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas. Because of the route's steepness, it is seldom used, and trekking poles are useful on the steep, slippery slopes in the rainforest

On trek all equipment and supplies are carried by porters, and a cook prepares all meals. Unlike the Marangu route, where accommodation is in mountain huts, the Umbwe route is camping with tents pitched by the porters. Meals are taken in the dinner tent or out in the open. This makes Umbwe better suited to the more experienced trekker. As the route is a 6 day trekking route, (Marangu is 5 days), the extra day may assist acclimatization.
