Day 1. Pretoria to Hazyview Highlights. Blyde River Canyon, South Africa.

Heading out from Pretoria we take the road to Mpumalanga Province and the bushveld town of Hazyview. Along the way we stop off at various points of interest on the famed Panorama Route where you'll soon see why this scenic area was was named so.

Tonight we set up camp at Hazyview on the outskirts of the Kruger National Park wildlife area.

Day 2. Kruger National Park Highlights. Kruger National Park, South Africa.

This morning we wake early and meet our resident guides and board the 4x4 vehicles before setting off on a day of viewing the amazing wildlife that inhabits the Kruger National Park.

Being one of Africa's largest wildlife reserves (a little larger than Belgium in size), Kruger offers an immense variety of animals, birds and reptiles to see including lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, elephant, zebra, hippo and more. With more than 500 species of birds, and a range of natural wilderness to explore, there is much to see in this Big 5 safari reserve.

We spend the day out exploring with a break at a local camp over lunch, before returning to our camp in the late afternoon.

Day 3. Kruger National Park

We make our way back into the Kruger National Park this morning for a second game drive to carry on our search for the 'big 5' - elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino. We can choose to head back over the ground covered yesterday or discover a new area of the park today in search of the wildlife we have yet to tick off of our Kruger National Park bucket list. Have you spotted the African wild dogs or heard the iconic cry of the African Fish Eagle yet?

*For travellers not taking the Adventure Pass, today is free to enjoy some other activities in the Hazyview area.

Day 4. Hazyview to Mlilwane, Swaziland Highlights. Swaziland (Eswatini).

We continue our adventure camping tour, travelling along the edge of Kruger National Park through the local settlements and make our way to the Kingdom of eSwatini (formerly known as Swaziland). Swaziland is landlocked between South Africa and Mozambique, with a fascinating culture and rich heritage. We stay at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, our base for the next two nights. This is Swaziland’s oldest protected area located in the stunning Ezulwini Valley - 'Valley of Heavens’.

Day 5. Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary Highlights. Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Swaziland (Eswatini). Swaziland (Eswatini) Cultural Village, Ezulwini Valley.

A short drive through the Mliwane Wildlife Sanctuary brings us to the Royal Enclosure where we discover an abundance of history and culture this monarchy controlled country has to offer. A local Swazi guide walks us through a traditional village, explaining many customs and rituals. After leisure time browsing street side markets and trying our hand bartering with crafters, we find our way back to the sanctuary for lunch and some free time this afternoon.

Day 6. Mlilwane to St Lucia, South Africa Highlights. St Lucia River Cruise, South Africa.

Leaving this marvelous sanctuary behind us we travel south through the Swazi countryside, before crossing the border and re-entering South Africa via the KwaZulu-Natal province. We head to the small coastal town of St. Lucia, set among wild beaches and a tropical estuary.

This afternoon we join a river cruise on the St. Lucia Lagoon viewing many hippo pods, lazy crocodiles, and numerous bird species on the sandy banks.

Day 7. St Lucia to Durban

This morning is yours at leisure to explore the town's numerous shops and market stalls, or to simply relax in the camps' stunning setting. We leave St Lucia mid-morning and drive through pine forests and sugar cane fields to our next stop at Umhlanga - just north of the port city of Durban. The afternoon is yours at leisure to enjoy what this city has on offer - from stunning beaches to a vibrant night life.

Day 8. Durban Highlights. Durban City .

Today is a day of leisure to explore the beauty Durban has to offer. Head to the Durban beachfront (known as the Golden Mile) and visit the colourful flea markets and a stretch of numerous quality restaurants with a view. Alternatively visit uShaka Marine World, or the Moses Mabhida stadium which offers 360 degrees views of Durban.

There are also a number of optional day tours available should you wish to explore the historic and cultural aspects that have shaped Durban's history.

Day 9. Durban to Underberg Area

Heading inland we drive via Pietermaritzburg and lush mountainous countryside, to the foot of the Sani Pass - the gateway to the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

This afternoon is yours at leisure to enjoy the spectacular views and the many amazing walking and hiking trails.

Day 10. Sani Pass Highlights. Sani Pass Excursion.

Today we join a guided tour of Lesotho via the breath-taking Sani Pass. We traverse the lush and steep mountains in a 4x4 vehicle (with a local guide at the wheel), slowly winding up the mountainside and on to the Sani Pass. Along the way we visit a Shepherd's village to have insight into how the local Basotho people in this area live and work. We then ascend the Black Mountains, the second highest peak in Lesotho. We enjoy a picnic lunch with a view and might sip a beverage or two at the highest pub in Africa before descending the mountains back to our lodge for the night.

Day 11. Underberg Area - Battlefileds - Drakensberg Highlights. Battlefields - South Africa.

We travel north along the foot of the Drakensberg, to the historic sites of the KwaZulu Natal Battlefields. Here we discover some of the history of the Anglo-Boer war and the many battles fought in the region between the local Zulu tribes during colonial times.

In the late afternoon we arrive at our next stop at the northern Drakensberg - a perfect place from which to base ourselves for exploring the majestic mountains around us.

Day 12. Drakensberg Highlights. Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa. Royal Natal National Park, South Africa.

Today we spend our time exploring the Royal Natal National Park which protects a section in the northern part of the Drakensberg - or uKhahlamba as it's known in the local Zulu language.

Renowned for its beautiful scenery and mountain trails, we have the opportunity to explore this reserve at the 'top' of KwaZulu-Natal, enjoying its scenic views and waterfalls. Be on the look out for San rock-art along the way and the local wildlife and bird-life that can be seen in the valleys and on hillsides.

Day 13. Drakensberg to Pretoria

Additional Info

This tour departs Pretoria early on day 1; we strongly recommend therefore that you plan to arrive the day before departure to overcome any jet-lag and acclimatise to Africa. We would be happy to book pre-tour accommodation for you – please call or email us (or speak to your agent) with your arrival details and accommodation requirements. However please book early to avoid disappointment and the risk of having to find more expensive (or less convenient) lodgings.

If time allows, we also suggest planning a night or two extra (after your tour) to make the most of this part of Africa. Accommodation is usually available locally on arrival but you can pre-book this with Acacia or your agent. There is a variety of activities and excursions in the Pretoria and surrounding areas that can be arranged locally.

These are optional activities that are booked during your holiday and paid directly to the provider while on tour. These options offer a variety of experiences and allow you the freedom to decide what activities you would like to do.

We use 2-person dome tents with fly sheets, sewn-in groundsheets, zip-up insect screens and foam mattresses. We mainly use campsites, which usually have reasonable wash and shower facilities, electricity points and sometimes even a small shop, bar or swimming pool.

24-seater, self-contained, custom-built safari vehicle with on-board tables, plug sockets, freezer, water tank, library, i-pod jack, safety features and 70-litre individual lockers and 4 x 4 safari vehicles.

In order to maximise the quality of game driving and to comply with local authority rulings, some of our National Park visits and game viewing is carried out using services provided by local African ground handlers. As well as enhancing our experience using local guides and smaller vehicles it also allows us to contribute at a ‘grassroots’ level to local economies from which local people benefit.

This is a participation tour and your help will be needed in assisting with the various day to day duties, such as shopping, cooking and keeping the vehicle tidy (usually on a rota basis). But don’t worry it’s not all hard work and it’s a great way to meet the local people and get to know your fellow travellers. Your contribution benefits the success of the tour - most people find the greater their involvement, the greater their enjoyment of the whole trip. Our accommodated tour option travels together with the camping counterpart.
