Our trip to the Serengeti was the most spectacular tour that I ever endured in my life and true to the movie ‘The Lion King’. Within ½ hour we stumbled on a kopje (hill) with a pride of lions feasting on their catch of the day – watching these carnivores animals devour the carcass of a zebra and the cubs waiting for their turn was simply amazing to watch. After sitting with the lions for almost half an hour we moved on to see what more we could spot.
We drove around to the hippo pool to see the residence pod wallow in the water and in the distance a herd of buffalo was nearing moving in a straight line. Behind the herd of buffalo was a herd of elephants moving towards the road where we were parked. We stopped and waited in anticipation camera at hand ready to see what was in store. The elephants were lead by the Matriarch protecting the young as they moved closer to the edge of the pool. As our eyes hid behind our lenses, we snapped away as the elephants drank and rolled in the mud. A truly spectacular view as we watched the animal behavior unfold.
As our day progressed viewing an abundance of gazelles, zebra and wildebeest grazing the lands as we meandered though the tree fringed roads in search for the elusive Leopard. As we scoured the trees our guide stopped all of a sudden and pulled out the binoculars. Heart pounding, head racing…there it was! A leopard with its catch of a small Thompson gazelle feasting high up the tree just before the evening was settling in and we were returning back to camp. We sat in awe and watched every move the leopard made.
The safari vehicle was full of chit chatter on return to our camp. We spotted ‘4’ of the ‘Big 5 ‘– if only we could see a rhino??? Unfortunately, Serengeti do not have any rhino, so we have to search tomorrow morning in the Ngorongoro National Park. Fingers crossed!
