Botswana will celebrate 50 years of independence in 2016, putting the country in the spotlight for the second year running. The Okavango Delta became UNESCO’s 1,000th World Heritage site in 2014 and more recently the destination topped Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016 list. Compiled by a team of experts, the judges took into account special events going on next year, recent developments in each country, and new things for travellers to see or do.
To mark its independence (30 September), tourists can expect to see Botswana’s flag flying high on all towers and tall buildings around the country. There are also plans for on going promotions including fashion shows, carnival market days, cultural festivals and traditional games around the country.
If you’re ready for an adventure, book a seat on the seven day Okavango Wilderness Trails. Discover the Gem of Africa on game drives in the Chobe National Park and mokoro and walking safaris in the delta.
