So it was off to Zanzibar and the beautiful beaches! I always look forward to our 3 days on the ‘spice island’ as it’s a chance to relax and we experience the hustle and bustle of Dar es Salaam when we catch our ferry. It always feels slightly stressful, but when you look back you have experienced the typical East African city life, I love it!
So in Zanzibar we know that we will say goodbye to 3 great ladies, Alison, Kelly and Kimberley as they are leaving us to go to Uganda and see the gorillas; I mention this as it is always slightly hard to say goodbye to those you get to know well, but with this we know that we are going to enjoy our last few days in style! We have a mix of Stone Town, fresh food markets for dinner and the beach…it sounds lush and it certainly is. Wandering round the the old Stone Town on our first day we see the eclectic mix of buildings, the Omani influence and beautiful doors, the Portuguese buildings and then the British colonial old fort; you can see the history of the town through it’s architecture. Along with the cultural walk it’s a chance for the group to pick up souvenirs from the different vendors as you weave in and out of the narrow streets – making sure you can retrace your steps as it can be a little bit like a maze; failing that the people on Zanzibar are so friendly, you can ask them to point you in the right direction and find them showing exactly the way back! The beaches are beautiful white sand coupled with some fabulous accommodation, we have two days to relax on the Indian Ocean and experience a local night out in Nungwe. We had a blast as the pictures show and then it was back to Dar es Salaam ready to do our two long days to Malawi, a chance to chill out in the truck, see amazing views as we drive through the Morogoro mountains and do a stop in another typical East African town.
