When it comes to atmospheric camping, you have to admit, Africa would pip most continents at the post, so here are five sensational sleepovers that will lull you into a peaceful slumber, and leave you wishing your tour had lasted just one night longer…
By day, Spitzkoppe is a unrivalled paradise for those who want to boulder across the rocks and pack in some ancient art gallery viewing, courtesy of the San Bushman. By night, the gallery is a gift from Mother Nature, the unpolluted skies painted with stars. Our tip when the sun starts to set, get that camera on the go as the Matterhorn of Africa is shutterbug bliss come dusk, and your Facebook friends will be begging to bag a trip to Namibia!
Do the Beehive hut in Swaziland! In the Milwane Wildlife Sanctuary you can sleep like the locals do. Finished off in reed and wood, this is the traditional deal – just remember to bring an extra layer so you can wrap up warm and please note, for the feint hearted, ear plugs could be a necessity, as you might well hear the roar of the wild!
No-one does it better than the Serengeti, yes this is atmospheric tent pitching all the way – even a few lions have passed by at dinner time, but don’t worry, these uninvited guests don’t tend to stay for long as the area of the camp is well patrolled by the local guides. Either way it’s a real treat being at one with the bush.
Go crowd free and revel in an eco retreat that spans a whole archipelago. Mozambique features a number of uninhabited islands where you can sample the country’s white bleached sands outside of the tourist enclaves. Head north, this region famed for its unspoilt coral reefs, and enjoy tossing your fresh catch over the campfire before bedding down in your two man dome tent.
Find yourself on one of many islands on the Okavango Delta the bush frogs across the lily carpeted waterways serenading you while you cosy up around the campfire. Before you turn in, listen to tales of the days walking safari – birds, warthogs and even hippos bidding you goodnight!
