At 8:30pm on Saturday the 29th of March, millions of people around the globe will be switching off their lights for Earth Hour as a symbolic act of global unity. This is an opportunity for everyone to come together and make a commitment to preserving our planet, the event building awareness and giving us a better understanding of our own impact on the environment.
33 finalists from 14 participating countries were selected from among the 163 entrants in this year’s Earth Hour City Challenge for sustainable city management, and Cape Town & Durban in South Africa were named finalists. In the end, Cape Town was selected as South Africa’s Earth Hour Capital, the city competing against the 32 other finalists from around the world. An expert jury will now review the actions and initiatives made in these cities and ultimately identify one sustainability leader per country for the National Earth Hour Capital Award. And, just one of these cities will be awarded the title of Global Earth Hour Capital 2014 for outstanding sustainability efforts. The winner will be announced in Vancouver prior to Earth Hour.
Visit the Mother City, Cape Town on one of the many tours we have on offer: 8-day Coast to Cape Town and the 17-day Kruger to Cape Town Small Group Safaris. On the overland side the 12-day Cape Desert Safari, 19-day Desert Tracker and then a longer overland expedition – the 43-day Kenya To Cape Town . Even better, Why not add on a 4 day Cape Town city stay to join in with the full festive unity and to support Cape Town in winning the ‘ Global Earth Hour capital of 2014’ .
