From May to July, South Africa puts on an underwater wildlife show – its number one annual migration a major attraction. During the greatest shoal on earth billions of sardines travel along the east coast of the country, the event exciting scuba divers, snorkellers, birds watchers, marine lovers, and photographers.
The huge shoals move from the cold currents of the Aghulhas bank (where the eggs are fertilized) into the warm sub-tropical water of the Northern Cape and KwaZulu Natal. The shoals are often more than 7 km long, 1.5 km wide and 30 metres deep and are clearly visible from the surface, charter planes and boats.
Due to the massive shoals this is a feeding frenzy, with thousands of birds plunging from the sky and feeding on the fish, and hundreds and thousands of Common and Bottlenose dolphins, whales and sharks (Zambezies, Bronze Whalers, Hammerheads and Great whites) all following the impressive body of sardines as it moves along the coast.
It’s a truly magical spectacle for both locals and visitors, many people hoping to view this magnificent migration. Hop on our Small Groups 17-day Kruger To Cape Town tour or 8-Day Cape Town To Durban tour and catch sight of the greatest migration shoal on earth.
