Recently Cape Town finally got a new bus service. Not only does “MyCiTi’ link up with Cape Town’s main ‘hot destinations’ including The V & A Waterfront, Cape Town International Airport, Century City, Hout Bay and local beach areas, it’s also travelled by locals who need to get from A to B. It’s a cost effective way to travel within and outside of the city on a budget and you won’t need to face all those unnecessary taxi charges. To top it off… they have their own bus lanes to ward off the peak hour traffic. In a nutshell it’s an easy and fast way to get around Cape Town and all you need is a card!
How does this card work?
Everyone needs their myconnect card to travel. The cost is R35 and the card can be bought from any MyCiTi station kiosk or participating retailer. All you have to do is to load it with money for travel. Your card comes with a pin, which you will need each time you load money onto the card.
Once your card has been loaded:
You will need to validate your card to travel with MyCiTi. Hold your card against the validator each time you enter and exit at a MyCiTi bus stop. It’s that easy!
Fares and other interests:
The fare is based on the distance in kilometers you travel and these are grouped into distance bands of 0-5km, 5-10km, 10-20km, 20-30km, 30-40km, 40-50km, 50-60km, and 60km or more. The distance for each journey is calculated from where you tap on the validator at the start of your journey to where you tap out at your final destination. Your journey can also include transfers and stops along the way.
There are 2 card options; the Mover fare – which is mainly for local travelling every day and is valid for 3 years and the Standard Card – more for the locals and travellers alike using this for leisure reasons. The below is based on the Standard Card fares.
There is a peak time pricing structure between the times of: 06:30am – 08:30am and 16:00 pm – 18:00 pm. These vary from R8.90 for 0-5km to R26.70 for 60km travelled or more.
The non-peak traveling fares vary from R6.80 from 0-5km to R22.30 for 60km travelling or more.
If anyone is adding on an Airport stop there is an additional R 56.20 cost at peak times and R38.70 for non-peak times.
