Great Zimbabwe National Monument, Zimbabwe

Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city that was once the capital of the kingdom of Zimbabwe, existing between 1100 and 1450 AD. The construction of the monument began in the 11th century and continued to be built up until the 14th century, and covered an area of 722 hectares. The city was eventually abandoned and left to ruin, and was first discovered by Europeans in the 16th century.
