Uganda

The pearl of Africa
One of the most beautiful and friendly countries in Africa. Home to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where chimpanzees and mountain gorillas can be trekked for. The capital Kampala, is built on a series of hills on the northern edge of Lake Victoria, and the neighbouring city of Jinja built over the outlet from that lake. The scenery to the west is dominated by high ranges of mountains and is suitably spectacular.

Queen Elizabeth National Park provides magnificent views of the mountains that separate Uganda from central Africa. The park has over 500 species of bird and 100 species of mammals making it one of the most bio diverse national parks in the world. It is also leads to Kyambura Gorge where treks for chimpanzees take place.

Surrounded by undulating hills is Lake Bunyonyi, at 27 kilometres long and 7 kilometres wide and with a depth of nearly 900m in parts its Africa’s second deepest lake. Close by is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which is home to many of the world’s remaining 700 mountain gorillas. Gorillas usually live in groups between 12 and 20 led by the ‘alpha male’, known as the ‘silverback’.

Late December to late February is generally known as the dry season in Uganda and good for gorilla although hot and humid. The next best time to see the gorillas is June – September, although gorilla trekking is a year round activity the difficulty level will increase when it is wet.

"From crossing the equator and getting to see the forests in the distance the excitement and anticipation was building. But nothing compares to the real thing, watching gorillas and chimpanzees in their natural habitats is one of those moments in life I will never forget."

Paul went on our 14-day Game Parks & Gorillas (Camping) in January 2018.

Uganda, nestled on the equator is home to the tallest mountain range in Africa, the source of the river Nile and Africa's largest lake

Uganda is a brilliant destination with mountain gorillas found in mist shrouded jungle and Chimpanzees seen up in the tree's past Queen Elizabeth National Park. Passing across the equator and visiting one of the many islands on Lake Bunyonyi, an ancient flooded valley.
