Day 1. Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park Highlights. Equator.

In the early hours of this morning, we travel through the misty countryside of Uganda. Making our way amidst the lush rolling hills and the local farmlands, home to Ugandan Ankole cattle. We stop off at the Equator point and continue from here, reaching our camp near the Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Bicycles are the main form of transport in most towns, but you'll also see many 'boda-boda' motorbike taxis flitting around as you leave the city. Uganda is also known as a 'green' country which you'll notice driving into the rural areas by the abundant greenery and lush fertile scenery along the way.

Day 2. Queen Elizabeth National Park, Chimpanzee Trek Highlights. Chimpanzee Trek, Kyambura Gorge, Uganda. Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda.

Furthering our exploration into the heart of Uganda we head to the Kymabura Gorge. Here we will be briefed on our Chimp Trek before heading out into the forest to seek these intelligent primates out. We may be fortunate to see the captivating chimps descend from the canopy to display their playful nature right in our pathway or enjoy their displays high up in the tree branches overhead.

Day 3. Queen Elizabeth National Park to Lake Bunyonyi Highlights. Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda.

Heading deeper into Uganda, our journey takes us to surreal Lake Bunyonyi. Named for the abundance of birds that surround the picturesque crater-lakes. Situated at the foot of the mountains, Lake Buynonyi is a tranquil hidden gem, where you can relax or enjoy a number of activities. Paddle across the crystal cool lake or visit the local orphanage and villages.

Day 4. Lake Bunyonyi, Gorilla Trek Highlights. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Mountain gorillas.

Heading out to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, we look forward to our much anticipated Gorilla Trek. Gathering for a briefing before trekking our groups head out into the thicket of the jungles in search of the remaining free-roaming gorillas. While the trek may take a few hours and be quite strenuous, the sight of gorillas in their natural habitat will be awe-inspiring and worth the effort.

Larger travel groups will be divided into smaller trekking groups over the next days, so trekking may take place either on day 4 or 5 of the tour.

Day 6. Lake Bunyonyi

Our last day in this picturesque region, take the opportunity to explore this hidden gem further and marvel at its serene beauty.

The exact itinerary for the days at Lake Bunyonyi are dependant on the dates for gorilla trek permits.

On non-trekking days, time can be spent at leisure enjoying the activites in the area or simply chilling out on the grassy banks of the lake.

Day 7. Lake Bunyonyi to Kampala Highlights. Equator. Kampala, Uganda.

Leaving the scenic hills we make our way back to Kampala, the capital. Here you will experience the vibrancy of the local markets, restaurants and bars. Seeing another side of this multifaceted country.

Day 7. Kampala to Jinja

Our tour takes us back into nature once again as we travel a short distance to the source of the Nile, at the town of Jinja. With many activities on offer, the camp at Jinja is located on the banks of the River Nile with breathtaking views of the river and is a popular stop on our tours. Local markets, adrenaline activities, bike tours and volunteering are just a few options on offer.

Day 8. Jinja Highlights. Jinja, Uganda.

Today we have a full day to explore with optional excursions or simply enjoying the view from the poolside.

Try white water rafting the Nile with its superb grade 5 rapids, or head to the local Softpower project to volunteer for the day. There are also bike rides, village walks and many other activities to enjoy during your stay at Jinja.

Day 9. Jinja to Kampala

After a relaxing morning, we retrace our footsteps back to Kampala where our tour ends in the late afternoon.

Additional Info

PRE TOUR ACCOMMODATION:
This tour departs Kampala early on day 1; we strongly recommend therefore that you plan to arrive at least the day before departure to overcome any jet-lag and to acclimatise to Africa. We would be happy to book pre-tour accommodation for you – please call or email us (or speak to your agent) with your arrival details and accommodation requirements. However please book early to avoid disappointment and the risk of having to find more expensive (or less convenient) lodgings.

If time allows, we also suggest planning a night or two extra (after your tour) to make the most of this part of Africa. Your Tour Leader can help with post-tour accommodation if required and there are a variety of activities and excursions in the Kampala area that you can arrange locally. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can pre book your accommodation at the time of booking your tour.

ACTIVITIES & EXCURSIONS:
These are optional activities that are booked during your holiday and paid directly to the provider while on tour. These options offer a variety of experiences and allow you the freedom to decide what activities you would like to do.

GORILLA & CHIMPANZEE TREK:
Depending on the availability of the chimpanzee and gorilla permits the tour itinerary may vary in day to day running order which is based on the brochure itinerary. From time to time we may have to trek on different days. If at any chance our Gorilla trek should be in another neighbouring country, eg Rwanda (instead of Uganda) this may entail extra visa fees although we shall endeavour to advise you before departure of any significant changes to the tour itinerary. Please take the above itinerary as a guide line only. This applies to day 3 – 5 of this tour.

ACCOMMODATION:
We use 2-person dome tents with fly sheets, sewn-in ground sheets, zip-up insect screens and foam mattresses. We mainly use campsites, which usually have reasonable wash and shower facilities, electricity points and sometimes even a small shop, bar or swimming pool.

TRANSPORT:
24-seater, self contained, custom-built safari truck with onboard tables, plug sockets, freezer, water tank, library, safety features and 70-litre individual lockers.

GAME PARK VISITS:
In order to maximise the quality of game driving and to comply with local authority rulings, some of our National Park visits and game viewing is carried out using services provided by local African ground handlers. As well as enhancing our experience using local guides and smaller vehicles it also allows us to contribute at a ‘grassroots’ level to local economies from which local people benefit.

TOUR STYLE:
This is a participation tour and your help will be needed in assisting with the various day to day duties, such as shopping, cooking and keeping the truck tidy (usually on a rota basis). But don’t worry it’s not all hard work and it’s a great way to meet the local people and get to know your fellow travellers. Your contribution benefits the success of the tour - most people find the greater their involvement, the greater their enjoyment of the whole trip. Our accommodated tour option travels together with the camping counterpart.
